The Coast Guard “Outer Continental Shelf National Center of Expertise” (the “OCS NCOE”) have recently put out a multi-part series on the interpretation of markings for electrical equipment installed in a Hazardous Location or Hazardous Area.

On this day in 1790, the U.S. Coast Guard was formed when George Washington signed the “Tariff Act” that authorized the construction of ten vessels, called “cutters,” to enforce federal laws at sea and to prevent smuggling. In 1915, the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service and was officially named the “U.S. Coast Guard.”

The U.S. Coast Guard has announced a sweeping revision to its marine safety program policy guidance, by cancelling the former Marine Safety Manual, Volume II, “Materiel Inspection,” and replacing it with seven separate policy documents, called “Commandant Instructions”.
